Homemade Dog Treat Recipe

For all of you who enjoy cooking and baking I thought it may be fun to treat our lovely doggies to some home baking - enjoy :)

Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits

2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 tbsp. baking powder
1 cup peanut butter (chunky or smooth)
1 cup milk

Preheat oven to 375'F. In a bowl, combine flour and baking powder. In another bowl, mix peanut butter and milk, then add to dry ingredients and mix well. Place dough on a lightly floured surface and knead. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness and use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Bake for 20 minutes on a greased baking sheet until lightly brown. Cool on a rack, then store in an airtight container. --- This is the original recipe, but I have found the cookies burn easily.

Channel 7 TV program Better Homes and Gardens along with resident vet, Dr Harry Cooper, will be travelling to the Sunshine Coast this weekend to film a number of stories.

One in particular is a story on Dog Agility which is being filmed in Brightwater
Park, part of the Brightwater Development, off Kawana Way in Mountain Creek.
This is being filmed this Sunday 7th March from approx 1300-1700, starring Dr Harry Cooper and the dogs and owners from the SunCoast Fun Dogs Agility Club.

They are needing some "audience" to be there on the afternoon, watching the
agility display.

Dogs and owners welcome, but people of all ages without dogs are very welcome too.

The show will air on the following Friday 12th March.

WOW! I thought I would share these images with you, they are all poodles from a creative grooming competiton, pretty amazing hey! As a dog groomer myself I have to say that I was blown away by these images, it takes real skill to produce this kind of work so "Kudos" to the groomers and well done to the poodles, let's not forget that dog's are colour blind so I don't think they mind the colour and they sure do love the attention they get :-)

Please be aware before you have a go yourself, it is dangerous to use human hair dye on dogs!

I used to bring my dog to the local off-leash park at least once a week. There was a girl with a chocolate lab puppy named Jeter. Now, I’m all for unusual dog names and naming your dog after somebody you really like… but she must have felt REALLY stupid screaming “JETER!” across the park when the pup would wander off.

Naming your dog can be one of the most entertaining parts of pet ownership; it can also be one of the most difficult decisions you have to make. My family quite regularly falls out over the issue of naming a new pet! Unusual dog names are really popular choices, but here are some helpful hints to keep in mind:

The embarrassment factor. Do you really want to be screaming your head off for “Mister Bubbles” in the middle of the night when your dog sneaks out of the yard?

Vowels carry. When you’re calling your dog, it’s the vowels that carry. Try yelling your own name: what part do you hold? It’s usually the vowels. If your name is Mike, the extra-loud version would be mIIIIIIIIIIIIIke!

Your dog’s appearance. Your cute little puppy may look like a Fuzzy-Wuzzy when he’s little, but he may grow up to be a biggy-wiggy who is embarrassed by his silly namey-wamey.

Your dog’s personality. Naming a toy poodle “Bruiser” may be a cute joke, but it could grow a bit wearing over time – and anyway, does it really suit your pup? Unusual dog names may be the order of the day, but let’s at least keep them appropriate!

Other important words. Don’t pick a name that sounds like a command your dog will be expected to follow. It will confuse your pup and complicate training for you! The eight basic training commands are: sit, stay, fetch, down, stand, leave, heel, and find. Try to keep away from these sounds.

Other names in the family. If your daughter is Holly and your dog is Molly, things are going to get a little confusing! Then again, sometimes my mother calls me by the dog’s name anyway. It can be very tiring for your poor pup to always come running when you’re calling her OR the sound-alike.

Keep it short and sweet. Even if you do want to choose from a list of unusual dog names, remember, the shorter your dog’s name is, the better! You can put a lot more authority into a short name like Max than into a long unusual dog names like Beethoven or Beelzebub.

Name changes can be confusing. If your adopted pet comes with a name you aren’t fond of, try switching it to a similar sounding name -- like turning Lucky into Lucy. I must say however, that it didn’t work for us – so back to Lucky we went, much to our disgust!

Try to pick a name your dog responds to. I know a dog who came from the shelter and who was already named Coyote, but he never answered to that name. During play one day, his owner called him a moose. Well, when he heard that, he sat right up at attention! He’s been Moose ever since.

Make sure the name you pick is short enough to fit on an ID tag. And make sure your dog wears his or her tags ALL THE TIME. No matter how careful you are, your dog will find a way to escape if he or she wants to.

Are you ready for a frightening statistic? Ninety-five percent of lost dogs who are NOT wearing tags are NEVER recovered. On the other hand, ninety-five percent of lost dogs who ARE wearing tags make it home safely. Don’t count on being lucky; make sure your dog wears an ID tag at all times.

Still stumped on what to call - or NOT to call your new best friend? Maybe we can inspire you …

Traditional dog names -- like Rex, Pal, Sparky, Prince, or Fido -- may go over well with the nostalgia buffs. Or if you are a bit of a history buff, think about famous historical figures! Lincoln, George, or just about any important person will do when looking for unusual dog names. Names of historical bad guys like Genghis or Nero might not go over as well as some others. You know what they say about, “give a dog a bad name and …….”

Pay homage to your favorite TV or movie stars by naming your pup after an actor or actress! Bogey would make a cute name for a dog, no? If your dog has a very outgoing personality, you may just want to give them a name from the a-list!

Or proudly proclaim your loyalty to Star Trek, Star Wars, or any sci-fi series. Spock the dog would tell you to “live long and paws-per” - sorry I couldn’t resist that! But remember the short and sweet rule when choosing unusual dog names: “Luke” would make a better name than “Skywalker” unless you’re going to call your dog “Sky” for short.

Turn the ordinary extraordinary by giving your dog a name in another language. Naming your dog One sounds boring, but “Uno” for a boy or “Una” for a girl sounds exotic and adorable - be different! You can also browse lists of popular baby names for inspiration.

Look to the skies -- there are plenty of interesting names to inspire you overhead in your search for unusual dog names. What about Jupiter or Pluto? How about Ursa or Rigel? A heavenly body may just have the perfect name for your little furry angel. And, talking about stars, how about naming your pet after a famous dog from stage, screen, or the pages of a book! How about Eddie (the dog from Frasier) or Tiger (the Brady Bunch family dog)? Did you read a book as a child that inspired your love of animals? Pull a name from the pages for your new friend!

If your dog is the dashing, heroic type, why not name him or her after a superhero? “Superman” may not be a good name for a dog, but the guy with the big S had more than one name. “Clark” or “Kent” isn’t bad, or you can go so far as to use his name from Krypton: “Kal-el”. There are plenty of heroes (and villains) out there to choose from!

Matching sets of unusual dog names - like Laurel and Hardy or Penn and Teller -- can be cute for a pair of pups. Think about celebrity couples, entertainers, musical acts, or even fictional characters! What about “Dharma” and “Greg” for a boy and girl? Beevis and Buthead may not go down so well though - especially if some burly passer-by thinks you’re referring to him rather than your dog - oh dear, that could spell trouble!

If you’ve always loved the Disney movies, you may want to give your pup a name inspired by the house of the mouse! “Mickey” is a great name for a pup, but don’t rule out names from newer productions, too! “Sulley”, “Ariel”, “Tinkerbell” -- let your imagination and your dog’s personality find the right name for your dog.

Your dog may have more presence than anything… why not name him or her for a mythological figure? “Hercules”, “Athena”, and other names from myth can lend your dog a sense of dignity and strength. I once knew a German Shepherd puppy named Zeus who went from an adorable fluffy pup to an imposing, dignified adult -- he truly grew into his name!

Let the kids pick a name from their favorite cartoons and kids shows - great inspiration for unusual dog names there! You may not want to call your dog “Spongebob”, but after some tactful negotiations - and a bribe or two - you may be able to agree on a name like Elmo, Nemo or Dorrie

For an athletic breed, why not choose an athletic name? A favorite star from a favorite sport might just have the perfect name for your pup. Just keep that embarrassment factor in mind -- if it doesn’t bother you to scream “Come here, Joe Montana!” when your dog gets out, then by all means, name him whatever you like. The sky - and the occasional sports star - is the limit when looking for unusual dog names.

So, to sum up, there are an abundance of great unusual dog names to choose from when naming the newest addition to your family. Let your imagination run riot. But, if you value your reputation and dignity, do remember all the top tips you have just read on what NOT to call your dog.

Dogs are very sociable creatures - it's part of the reason why we love dogs so much. The problem is that when a dog becomes too sociable they can be become agressive and get out of control. That's why it's important to train your dog from an early age to make sure that you can control their behavior and prevent this type of behavioral problem.

The most worrying type of agression from any dog is biting as this can have disasterous consequences on both the dog and its family. Current statistics shows that over 70% of dog biting incidents happen within the dogs family. Some of these lead to the dog in question being put down to prevent it happening in future - especially where young children are involved. This is the most tragic possible outcome that could have been prevented by some effective training in the first place.

Proper dog training, from an early age, helps prevent these habits developing in the dog. The training will also allow your dog to remain more in control of their feelings towards other humans and animals. This will give them a better "social life" and allow them to integrate more quickly with their family and their new surroundings.

Actually training the dog is another story. It's not always as easy as some people make it out to be. Certain things need to be in place for the training to be truly successful. One of the most critical aspects of training any dog is something called "positive reinforcement". This is simply the system where the dog is rewarded with treats or praise (or sometimes both) when the dog obeys commands or shows positive behavior in their environment. Positive reinforcement shows the dog that they'll be praised and/or receive a treat when they obey new commands or exhibit a certain behavior that their owner requires. It's a matter of the dog associating certain good feelings (treats or praise) with obeying a command from his owner. This type of association can quickly become instinctual for the dog.

What if your dog doesn't immediately obey these new commands or shows a negative behavior? Do you punish the dog? Absolutely not! This sends the dog mixed signals i.e. that the same verbal command or request could just as easily being punished as rewarded. If your dog begins to doubt you in relation to praise or punishment then the training can become very difficult; if not impossible.

Another major mistake to avoid is training the dog into a bad habit - instead of in the opposite direction. For example, when dogs bark, it is usually because they've seen or heard something strange or unfamiliar. When dogs continue to bark, even if it includes barking at a familiar person, that becomes a problem. How do most people deal with their dog barking? They yell at the dog to shut up. Unfortunately the dog could take this action as their owner joining in the "barking experience" and the dog will then just continue to bark every time they're yelled at thus making matters worse for everyone involved.

Any dog training performed without some form of positive reinforcement is a waste of the dogs and the owners time. The sooner you adopt this technique into your training program for your new pup or older dog the sooner you'll see positive results.

Grooming Basics - Brushing your Dog

Grooming your dog regularly will keep his coat and skin in tip top condition so it makes good sense to groom your dog as part of his preventative health program.
Brushing removes loose & dead hair and distributes skin oils throughout your dog's coat.
A universal slicker brush followed by a steel comb is good for most coat types but if your unsure ask a professional to recommend the right brush for your dogs coat.

How often should I brush my dog!
Short haired dogs such as boxers, Labradors etc will probably need brushing only once or twice a week whilst long haired dogs such as an Afghan will probably need brushing more often, if however you own a curly coated breed such as a Poodle or a Bichon then you will need to brush him daily to prevent mats from forming.
Mats are areas of tangled hair, to remove a mat first try to untangle the hair with your fingers if you can't untangle it use a mat splitter to cut through the mat then brush again with a slicker brush, never be tempted to cut out the mat with scissors because they usually sit close to the skin making it very easy for you to cut your pet, if you have no success removing the mat yourself then consult your groomer, it may need to be removed with clippers. Remember prevention is always better than the cure and if you brush your dog regularly you will prevent painful mats from forming.

Get into a routine!
This will ensure you never miss bits, some people like to brush their dog from head to tail whilst others do the reverse, try brushing the rear legs followed by the body, tail, front legs then head.It doesn't really matter which body part you start with but a routine will help you to be thorough

Starting your grooming session after vigorous exercise should help your dog remain calm, dogs don't always enjoy being brushed but he will learn to enjoy his grooming sessions if you make it fun.

Remember always stay calm yourself, never get cross with your dog, he will learn through positive reinforcement, give him lots of praise and always end with a treat or a game with his favorite toy

Grooming isn't just about making your dog look pretty, it removes dead hair and prevents painful mats from forming, keeping your dog's coat and skin healthy. Anyone who has ever groomed a dog will tell you that it is much easier to groom a well maintained coat than a coat that is full of mats, this is true for both the groomer and the dog.
Here are some tips you can try to show your dog that grooming can be fun.

Start whilst your puppy is still young, this is the ideal time as your puppy's coat will still be soft and fluffy and should not need a lot of brushing, begin by sitting your puppy on your knee and stroke him to relax and calm him, then brush gently for just a few minutes after brushing stroke his feet and examine his nails, doing this a couple of times a day will help you build a good relationship and get him used to being handled, ignore any attempts he makes to chew the brush.
If your dog is older designate an area to groom him, a table or laundry bench top with a non-slip mat is ideal for a small dog (never leave a dog unattended on a raised surface)
Dogs love routine - try to establish a routine for your grooming, the best time is when your dog is a little bit tired after his daily walk or a vigorous play session.
Stay calm, never shout or show aggression, your dog will learn through positive reinforcement - lots of praise.
Give lots of praise during your grooming session.
Always end your session on a positive note and reward your dog with a treat or a toy.

If you practice these simple tips your dog will soon learn to enjoy their grooming sessions, this will make him easier to handle for you, your vet and your groomer

Most people don't stop to think about the food they are giving their dog. The colourful packs on the laden supermarket shelves are normally as far as people give dog food a thought. You may be one of them, but are now branching out and looking for something a bit healthier.
Believe me, the packs can look tempting and with smiling veterinarians and dog breeders on the cover, you're not that hard to convince.
But stop for a moment and consider a wild dog's diet. Dogs are naturally pack animals and so they hunt in packs. They can bring down a large animal, as large as a cow, with their combined efforts. Then they all gather round, with much growling and snarling and consume most of the carcass, bones and all. Probably the only parts left is the hide and hooves.
Whether or not you can accept this idea, that's how dogs evolved. And the wild dogs still manage very well. This is the most healthy dog food. There is nothing that can beat it.
Man, with his puny pseudo scientific ideas of improving on the natural diet of dogs is going down a dead end. You can't.
Period.
There is only one type of healthy dog food. And that is the one which so closely resembles a wild dog's diet, as to be virtually the same as far as health benefits are concerned.
Lets look at some of the differences between a wild dog's diet and commercial dog food, a diet most dogs exist on (I won't say live, as it''s hardly a life).
A wild diet, a healthy dog food, consists of: raw food lots of raw bones internal organs are consumed, but these are scarce compared with the muscle meat carbohydrates which are limited to the stomach contents, so is small in the overall content
A typical commercial dog food consists of: cooked food (many vitamins, enzymes and other nutrients are destroyed by cooking) the meat is of poor (often extremely poor) quality (humans get the good stuff) carbohydrates, in particular sugar, are a major part of the food - it's cheap and bulks out the 'meat' the food is fortified with strong preservatives (not allowed in human food for their dangerous impact on health) - DESPITE WHAT THE LABEL SAYS to try to redress the nutritional imbalance, isolated and synthetic nutrients are added - nutrients which can't be properly absorbed and utilised when they are in isolation, or if they are synthetic
So in your search for a healthy dog food, keep firmly in mind the diet of a wild dog. It's OK to take your time to get used to the idea. If you find the idea repulsive, just go slowly. Try to replace one thing at a time. Just keep in mind that dogs have evolved over millions of years, on this diet. Humans have only been producing (poor quality) commercial dog food for a few decades.
If you don't like the idea of raw meat for your dog, that's your issue, not his.
I also suggest that you keep in mind the concept that most people are lured by price. With the best will in the world, if a commercial pet food manufacturer suddenly started to produce quality pet food, because it would be more expensive, do you think it would be a sell-out?
That would only be possible if people had already started to reject the current commercial dog food and were now looking for a healthy dog food, so were prepared to pay a little more.
However, if you make your own dog food, you won't need to find the extra cash. Not only is a homemade, healthy dog food economical to produce, it has an enormous impact on the health of your dog, often beyond your wildest dreams.
